North London
The north of London is broadly recognized as stretching from St John’s Wood in the west to Islington in the east. Regents Park and Hampstead Heath are oases of green in an otherwise urban landscape.
St John’s Wood is north west of Regent’s Park. It is an exclusive area of large houses and mansion apartments which are very popular with expatriate families. As well as the cachet and the residential possibilities, what draws people to this area is the proximity to Lord’s Cricket Ground, London Zoo and Camden Market as well as the controversial Saatchi Gallery and the iconic Abbey Road studios where the Beatles recorded the bulk of their albums.
The Borough of Camden stretches from Holborn to Hampstead and Highgate. The borough contains a wide variety of commercial and residential property, from student flats and terraces to quaint cottages and magnificent mansions in parts of Hampstead. Camden is a tourist mecca for its market and its nightlife. The market scene in Camden began as a collection of craft stalls on Camden Lock and antiques vendors in Camden Passage, Camden Market now stretches almost to Chalk Farm tube station! Camden offers an eclectic mix of nightlife, from contemporary concerts at Camden Palais through comedy venues and numerous themed and unthemed pubs and restaurants to jazz at the Jazz Café.
Islington is a vibrant area, renowned for its culture and craftsmanship. It is predominantly industrial and residential with few open spaces. Light industry and crafts such as jewellery and clockmaking are established in Clerkenwell and Sadlers Wells is world famous for opera and ballet. However, if you don’t live here you are more likely to visit the area for one of the many bars, clubs or restaurants to be found on Upper Street.
Hampstead is a very exclusive neighbourhood. Part of its cachet comes from being attached to Hampstead Heath, which is generally well beloved by Londoners; but most comes from the fact that the Hampstead psyche is very much of a village, albeit within extraordinarily easy reach of all that central London has to offer. Hampstead has most things which contribute to it being a self sufficient community, a theatre, golf club, excellent local shopping including high street names and specialist retailers and more bars and cafes than you could shake a stick at, in fact West Hampstead has become a leisure destination for most of north London.
If you have tried a couple of walks on Hampstead Heath and feel like a change, Highgate Cemetery, the final resting place of Karl Marx, is a fascinating place to wander and marvel at the famous names on the headstones. Slightly further to the north, but still within a short drive, Alexandra Palace and park offer further outdoor possibilities with a beautiful deer park, nature conservation area and public gardens as well as ‘Ally Pally’ being north London’s premier large concert and event venue, with it’s own indoor ice rink (of course!).
