East London

East London has an unparalleled history of international trade focused in the Docklands area which was once known as the Emporium of the World and which stretched over some 8.5 square miles from the Tower of London to the Royal Docks at North Woolwich.

Docklands has undergone a renaissance and is now a very interesting place. Canary Wharf, with its complex of offices, concert hall, shopping malls and wide choice of waterside pubs and restaurants is overlooked by Cesar Pelli’s imposing 800-foot tower. The striking contemporary architecture is complemented by the areas original 17th century churches and ancient street markets.

The area is beloved of well off young couples who working in Canary Wharf or the City and who buy luxury apartments in the contemporary tower blocks or conversion ‘loft style’ apartments in the old warehouses lining the river. Indeed, the lifestyle on offer in this area is very DINKY (dual income no kids) as it involves lots of bars and restaurants scattered among the office blocks, to accommodate late night partying after overtime in the office; Friday night curries in the ubiquitous Brick Lane; and leisurely Sunday strolls through one of the many East End markets.

The transport infrastructure of the area is continually improving. Speedy travel to the City and breathtaking views are provided by the Docklands Light Railway, plus the East London Line, the new Crossrail link and the Jubilee Line extension have all added further to travel options. Work is continuing on London’s first new village for 100 years, West Silvertown Urban Village and more high-profile development is set to continue in and around Stratford in the run up to the 2012 Olympic Games which will showcase this area of London.
